Palo Santo wood comes from Ecuador. Its slow burning is almost hypnotic, its white smoke filled with woody aromas, and lemon, spices, mint, even aniseed-like notes. Known as a “soul cleanser” in indigenous shamanic culture, the sacred wood purifies the air while it burns, deodorizes, wards off negative energy, and brings balance to the spirit.
Description
Slow-burning Palo Santo emits a woody, lemon-scented smoke, with sweet hints of pine, aniseed and mint. Its curling smoke transports you to a seat by an aromatic campfire, outside the turmoils of present times, your soul soothed, the air pure and inspiring.
Palo Santo wood – meaning “Holy Stick” – comes from the Bursera graveolens, a tree native to tropical forests in South America, and was already used by the Incas to purify the atmosphere of negative energies (mala energía) and bring back luck.
In Peru, shamans use its smoke to create an “energy shield” and keep evil spirits at bay.
ORIGIN
On the Pacific coast of the Ecuador, in the dry forests of the Manabi region, the Officine carefully and respectfully harvests Palo Santo wood on the naturally dead branches of Bursera graveolens. The producer has also initiated a pilot protection and reforestation program including nurseries: more than 10,000 trees have already been planted in the past few years.
“This is the smell I love. This and fresh-cut clover, the crushed sage as you ride after cattle, wood smoke and the burning leaves of autumn.”
Ernest Hemingway, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (1940)
Advice for Use & Care
Hold one end of the Palo Santo stick to a flame, turning it to make sure it catches evenly.
Wait a few seconds and blow the flame out.
A delicate white plume curls upwards above the red ember at the end of the stick, the air fills with its unique and soothing scent.
Palo Santo wood is dense, and the flame can burn off easily. Don’t hesitate to repeat the ritual several times.
We recommend putting the consuming Palo Santo on a fire-safe recipient to collect the ash (ashtray, earthenware…).
Let it burn off on its own or put out on the side of the recipient. Make sure the stick is properly extinguished before storing it.
NB: in order to scare away the evil spirits, walk around your cabin armed with a lit Palo Santo stick and then open the window so that the spirits can go elsewhere.
