By far the most elegant and delicate way to perfume a room, the alabaster is made of three elements: a porcelain box, a stone and a perfume essence bottle. The “Sumi Hinoki” alabaster fills the chosen space – antechamber, boudoir, bathroom, dressing room, car and other glove compartments – with bewitching smoked Hinoki wood, cypress, juniper berries, and incense accords.
Scent
The “Sumi Hinoki” alabaster manages to capture the elusive essence of the precious smoke emanating from Japanese Cypress wood. First, the wood is burned by the flame, consumed in an aromatic cloud. In Japanese, Sumi means charcoal, or purity. With its smoky head notes, the “Sumi Hinoki” scent takes its inspiration from the smell of Kyoto’s black charred wood houses, built with Sugi cypress wood using the traditional technique known as Yasugi or shou sugi ban (preserving wood with fire). Yasugi is also closely linked to Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese philosophy of valuing the singular, unique beauty found in imperfection. This soothing “smoked” fragrance is reminiscent of winter time, with old houses in the background and a more complex foreground.
Then comes the time of the incense ceremony, with the reassuring sweetness, half leather, half vetiver, of Gaiac wood, and the splendid dynamic of Hinoki wood, like cedar shrouded in aromatic herbs.
The next layer of “Sumi Hinoki” reveals an amber-like caress on the skin, with peppery notes of juniper berries and the lingering resinous notes of incense, round, almost spicy, moving the perfume into a sacred dimension.
Finally, cypress, a symbol of eternity since the dawn of time, distils its green magic, with acidulous, almost fresh notes that reveal, in their alliance with Hinoki wood, a wood worthy of the most beautiful temples in Japan. And thus, it has come full – divine – circle.
The Officine's prowess
The Alabaster is a new heatless, smokeless way to diffuse a fragrance, with a considerable perfuming power. Its name comes from the Greek vases used to draw and hold scented oils for body care rituals or the first perfumes, and whose porous pottery retained the exquisite scent.
The Alabaster is a painted porcelain box – there’s a choice of three portraits – containing a simply cut piece of an extremely porous sedimentary stone, and comes with a 5 ml perfume concentrate bottle. The pumice stone and its myriad vesicles is extremely absorbant and therefore the perfect mineral to diffuse the scent.
Open or close the box of the Alabaster at will to free the fascinating Buly fragrance or to seal it back in.
Advice for Use & Care
Pour 1/3 of the perfume essence on the stone.
The scented blend diffuses naturally while the elegant blue and white porcelain box is open. The Alabaster is perfect to perfume wardrobes, drawers, bathrooms, cars, small and medium-sized rooms efficiently and durably.
NB. Pour the perfume essence with care. In case of contact with hands, wash them and rinse them thoroughly. Do not ingest and keep out of the reach of children. Keep away from heat or spark sources. Avoid contact with eyes and skin.

One might inevitably feel compelled to collect the alabasters’ porcelain boxes: designed by the Officine, they’re inspired by 19th-century engravings, at a time when cosmetics and beauty were revamped by a few visionary people, such as Claude and Jean-Vincent Bully. Mademoiselle Mars, Mademoiselle Baïkal, or Mademoiselle Ismir: who will be the chosen one on your dressing table? On the side of your bathtub? Which of these ladies will diffuse the unique scent in your home?
