The Shikotsuko wood comb intensely styles and smooths hair as much as it grooms with precision thick hair requiring a remarkable radiance. Lastingly efficient and beautiful, this luxurious object is an exceptional item that works wonders on the hair fibre … a comb like no other enabling astounding precision on hair strands.
Description
To lay hold of a minebari wood comb firstly means feeling the magic of a unique touch, chiselled by the expert hand of the craftsman. Secondly, it means reaching beauty for smoother long or short hair. All these combs provide protection and shine thanks to the camellia oil with which they are impregnated for many years in order to restore the beautifying and restructuring properties right to the core of the hair. Its format is ideal for combing hair strands with ultimate precision, in order to appreciate the impeccable sheathing when styling the hair. This comb is designed to be held with ease when slid along the hair thus marking the lines. The frizziness is reduced and the hair fibre thus sheathed reveals a particularly characteristic shine: its glow is enhanced and the hair becomes silky and radiant.
Coming from the north of Japan, in the province of Niigata, with its very fine grain, remarkable strength and hardness, the wood of this alnus firma allows the manufacture of wood pieces of great reputation. Near the city of Kiso (Nagano Prefecture), one can worship the divinity of wooden combs in the Yashiro-sha shrine. It is indeed customary to thank her for this gift of nature. This traditional comb is rooted in the following legend: a wonderful young lady, O-Ruku, whose headaches were as intense as there they tireless, was cured thanks to a comb made of minebari wood. After careful use of the waxing moon-like tool, the hair glowed with an incredible light – and this was the only claim the Officine could proudly verify. In Japanese culture, whether lunar, seasonal or natural, cycles mark the local philosophy of life. A waxing moon is synonymous with abundance and renewal.
The origin of the word comb (kushi, in Japanese) literally means “spiritual power”, as in collective thought, the comb has a mystical significance since the dawn of time. So much so that during weddings of the imperial family, a comb is placed on the hairstyle of the bride, as a divine protection. It is said that the spirit of its owner pervades the comb like a duplicate of oneself, hence a strictly personal use according to this custom.
Or how to paint your hair with light and mystery…

The Officine's prowess
Kiso has been the capital of the minebari wood comb since the Edo era – 1600 to 1868. For these craftsmen, visiting the temple of of Yabuhura daily to purify their body and mind before devoting themselves to their work is a ritual, a ceremonial act. The wood from which these combs are made is a rare species with an extremely slow growth, the maintenance and monitoring of which are carried out by several generations of the same family. It is after 300 years that the wood is treated to produce the combs. According to the “Testuki-kusi” method, that is, by the work of the hands, they are put to rest in a cellar for a hundred years. They are then immersed in camellia oil for a hundred years. This endows the wood with smoothing and nourishing properties. Like a sculpture, the combs are shaped by the touch of the artist-craftsman before being entrusted to the machine for the making of the teeth. This so-called “Tokashi-kushi” method enables, by polishing, to make the latter particularly regular so as to avoid the comb injuring their hair or scalp. Art is called upon to urgently sublimate hair and hairstyles, using centuries-old methods with…immediate results.
Advice for Use & Care
We prefer this comb to sculpt the hair and give it light, not to untangle it. It is more of a healing comb rather than a comb to clean up hair tundra!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
For the maintenance of your minebari wood accessory, soak it in camellia oil to remove stains. Wait for the particles to rise to the surface and then clean with a soft toothbrush. This simple process will enhance the beauty of your comb, prolong its shine and preserve its longevity. Be careful! Do not use any other detergent to wash the minebari comb as it could deform.
